Public consultation on this issues paper has now closed.
We consulted stakeholders to inform a Biosecurity Import Risk Analysis (BIRA) for the importation of natural casings for human consumption. A BIRA is a regulated risk analysis process under the Biosecurity Act 2015 and the Biosecurity Regulation 2016.
For the purposes of this evaluation, we define natural casings as intestines that have been cleaned, processed by scraping, defatting and washing, and preserved using salt or brine.
How you had your say
On 9 July 2026 we released the issues paper for feedback, which closed on 10 August 2026.
We invited feedback from a wide range of stakeholders, including industry, farmers, importers, governments, researchers, and members of the public.
What happens next
We will consider all feedback and submissions received during the consultation period as we prepare the draft report.
