Share your views on proposed changes to Australia’s animal welfare requirements
The Australian Standards for the Export of Livestock (ASEL) 3.3 outlines the minimum animal health and welfare conditions that exporters must meet when exporting livestock.
We are reviewing the ASEL for version 4.0 to ensure the standards remain fit for purpose and aligned with best practice. Our proposed changes build on stakeholder feedback and aim to streamline the ASEL and support flexibility while maintaining animal health and welfare outcomes.
To inform our review, we are conducting 3 tranches of consultation with stakeholders. Tranche 2 seeks stakeholder feedback on 3 discussion papers which outline proposed changes to the export of livestock by sea and by air, including:
bedding related requirements
minimum feed requirements
minimum crate pen area requirements for camels exported by air.
Your feedback will help to inform improvements to the ASEL and ensure standards remain fit for purpose.
To have your say on proposed changes to the ASEL, please:
read the discussion papers
submit your feedback by answering questions or uploading a document.
Submit your feedback by 5 pm (AEST) on Tuesday 9 June 2026.
