Public consultation on updating ANZSCO agriculture occupations is closed.

We are working with the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Together we are reviewing how agriculture occupations are classified in the Australian New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO).

How ANZSCO is used

ANZSCO is used when gathering statistics about the Australian workforce. This includes the Census. ANZSCO is also used to inform eligibility for government programs, such as skilled migration programs.

First implemented in 2006, ANZSCO is based primarily on analysis of occupations in 2001 Census data. Since then, the agriculture sector has changed. Businesses have innovated and responded to market and technology changes. The workforce has also changed. Industry has asked for ANZSCO to be updated to better reflect modern agriculture.

2021 update

The 2021 update will produce an experimental version of ANZSCO to better reflect modern agriculture. It will capture existing and emerging agriculture, fisheries and forestry occupations and their skill levels.

It will also consider occupations closely aligned to the agriculture sector. This includes the initial stages of meat processing.

The ABS also worked with other partner agencies for the 2021 update. They looked at other focus areas, such as cybersecurity.
