We sought feedback from people about Recycling from international maritime vessels in to first points of entry into Australia.
We invited feedback via the Have Your Say survey from people across cruise, commercial and port operators. In addition to the HYS:
All Australian ports that currently manage waste from international vessels were sent an individual letter that outlined the maritime recycling project and invited their participation.
Cruise vessel operators and several key commercial shipping operators were sent individual letters outlining the project and invite for participation.
An advertisement was undertaken by AMSA in the Australian Shipping Magazine.
AMSA and DAFF presented at Port Australia biannual meeting.
Project team visited participating vessels and ports throughout the trial period.
An IIAN was posted on the department’s website.
Virtual meetings and phone communication prior and during the recycling project.
2 people participated in the review.
2 responded through our survey.
Multiple people met with us to give feedback on the whole of the project. The survey was one additional option for communication, mostly the maritime industry prefer face to face meetings or phone or email communication. These meetings occurred throughout the development and during the trial period. Further discussion will be occurring after the trial when we develop policy based on the findings of the trial project.
There were not many themes raised by participants of the HYS survey. Mostly the frequently asked questions page was visited in the pages. As previously outlined, all recycle trial participants were met with or were communicated directly through the recycling project team. The HYS survey was developed to be another, anonymous channel for communication if needed, however industry seemed to prefer to communicate directly with the project team on any issues or themes.
Mostly the questions raised were about costs for waste recycling providers which is a commercial question that DAFF cannot answer.
DAFF will continue to collaborate with animal and plant policy and develop a national policy on maritime recycled material based on the findings of the Maritime recycling trial. DAFF will continue to engage with the maritime industry and AMSA.
