Remaking the Imported Food Control Regulations

The importation of food for commercial purposes into Australia is regulated by the Imported Food Control Act 1992 and its subordinate legislation including the Imported Food Control Regulations 1993 (the Regulations). The Regulations will be automatically repealed on 1 October 2019 as part of the sunsetting process that all Australian subordinate legislation is subject to. This project aims to remake the Regulations so that they continue to be law.

The changes have been designed to:

  • reduce the complexity of administration
  • provide flexibility in the imported food inspection scheme’s approach to address changing trade in food
  • ensure we reflect best practice regulation.

About consultation

Public consultation on the Regulations opened on 14 January 2019 and closed on 28 February 2019. We would like to thank all contributors for submissions we received.
