Proposed projects for Water Efficiency Program

The Water Efficiency Program provides funding of $1.5 billion:

  • for eligible water rights holders in the Murray-Darling Basin
  • transfer water to the Commonwealth under a contract to do efficiency works to achieve water savings.

We work with Basin states and other stakeholders to consider each project proposal.

Review of project proposals

Each proposed project is subject to a period of public comment.

We will consider your feedback when we decide if proposals will be included on our register of potential Water Efficiency Program projects.

Projects open for public comment are already assessed by the Australian Government and the relevant Basin state government.

    Read the submitted project description:

The Proponent currently stores water using two gully reservoirs which are prone to high evaporation losses. The storages are shallow, with large surface areas and little protection from wind. The Proponent's intended project involves the construction of a deeper aboveground ring tank reservoir within close proximity to the current storages allowing the main dam to be utilised as a tail water return sump. Water will be transferred north of the storage to irrigation fields via a pumping system and pipeline, minimising water losses. All allocated water extracted from the creek will be pumped directly to the new highly water efficient storage, meaning no allocated water would be stored in the original gully style dams. These dams would be used to capture tail water and chemical run-off only.

The Proponent's intention is not to store and hold more water than its allocation but to increase the efficiency of its water storage as it is indicated the company can currently lose up to 600-800Ml per year in evaporation. A commissioned consulting engineer completed a hydrologic report indicating that the water use efficiency of the current storages is 31.9%. The development of a project including a new deep above ground storage would reduce annual evaporation losses by 425ML increasing WUE by 58%. The new development, channel and piping system was designed in 2006 by a civil engineer. With The Proponent's previous experience developing the initial irrigation we have confidence in completing the project without a delivery partner. We would be working closely with the civil engineer throughout the project to ensure it is managed correctly.
