We asked for your feedback to shape the next National Drought Agreement (NDA). This is what you told us.

How you had your say

You gave feedback on the draft agreement text and the draft monitoring, evaluation and learning framework through:

  • an online survey
  • written submissions.

Who engaged

We invited feedback from the agricultural, private, industry representative, and government sector, as well as from individual members of the publics.

In 2018, the Australian Government and all states and territories signed the current NDA. We committed to a consistent and shared approach to how we worked together on drought.

The current NDA expires in June 2024. It was reviewed in 2022. This Department, as secretariat for the review and acting for all NDA signatories, consulted with you during the review (see consultation summary and outcome).

The Australian Government and all states and territories then drafted a new agreement, which responded to recommendations of the 2022 review.

We shared the draft of the new agreement and sought your views on it throughout August 2023.

We also consulted on a draft monitoring, evaluation, and learning framework that set out our initial, high-level thoughts on how we will monitor progress against the outcomes of the new agreement.

What you said

The consultation process found there was strong support for the draft of the new NDA.

Many stakeholders were positive about the agreement clearly setting out the national policy, and the framework of how jurisdictions will work with each other on drought policies and programs.

Learn more about the feedback received in our consultation summary.

What happens next?

Feedback will be used to help finalise the new NDA before it is signed in 2024, and refine the monitoring, evaluation, and learning framework.
