Share your views on proposed regulation changes to protect Australian wildlife from rodent pest control products.

We are seeking feedback on a proposal to declare second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) as restricted chemical products (RCPs).

SGARs can pose secondary poisoning risks to non-target species, particularly native birds and animals. The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA), Australia’s independent regulator of agricultural and veterinary chemicals, has recommended restricting access and use of SGARs to authorised users to manage these risks.

What is being proposed?

We are proposing to declare the five SGARs currently registered in Australia as RCPs. This applies to products containing:

  • brodifacoum

  • bromadiolone

  • difenacoum

  • difethialone

  • flocoumafen.

If declared as RCPs, these rodenticides would only be available to people authorised under legislation in each state and territory.

To support this consultation, we have prepared a discussion paper that details the proposal and its potential impacts. We invite stakeholders to share their views on the proposal and the issues raised in the discussion paper. Your feedback will help inform decisions that reduce risks while ensuring rodent control remains effective.
