Biosecurity Protection Levy

Have your say in the design and implementation of the Biosecurity Protection Levy.

From 1 July 2024, primary producers will contribute to the cost of Australian Government biosecurity activities with a new levy called the Biosecurity Protection Levy.

We are giving you the opportunity to help shape the way the new levy is applied.

More taxpayer funding is now committed to biosecurity than ever before, but we are still not covering the full cost of our services. We’re asking agriculture, fisheries and forestry producers to contribute. These are industries which most benefit from the biosecurity system.

The proposed levy will start from 1 July 2024 and aims to collect around $50 million per year. This is around 6 per cent (on an annual basis) of the Commonwealth biosecurity funding in 2024-25.

We want to make sure that biosecurity protection levy arrangements are practical, and that implementation and administration costs are as low as possible for all parties. Your feedback will help us design the levy in a way that achieves this goal.
