    Fifteen officers from the Department of Agriculture participated in the Grain Grower’s tour of the Riverina in NSW from 9-11 September. This is the fourth year of the tour which included 26 participants from a number of government organisations.

    The ‘paddock to plate experience’ across the grains value chain was an opportunity to see how policy affects what happens on farm and beyond. Participants toured a Temora grain farm, grain storage and logistics sites, research facilities and processing plants in the region.

    On Wednesday, 28 August 2019 we attended the launch event for the Centre for Entrepreneurial Agri-Technology (CEAT), an initiative of the Australian National University (ANU) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), together with the ACT Government.

    The event saw the centre launched by Chief Minister Andrew Barr MLA, Professor Brian Schmidt Vice chancellor of ANU and Dr Michiel van Lookerent Campagne, Director CSIRO Agriculture & Food.     The inaugural Biosecurity Symposium, hosted by Animal Health Australia, the Invasive Species Council and the Centre for Invasive Species Solutions was held on the Gold Coast from 12-13 June 2019. Both private and public sectors were well represented with attendees from a number of domestic and international biosecurity organisations.

    The key theme of the symposium was future-proofing the biosecurity system with a focus on preventative biosecurity practices, research and innovation, outside of the box thinking and the exchange of knowledge and ideas.

  • Public Sector Innovation Show 2019

    Last week we attended the Public Sector Innovation Show 2019 at the National Convention Centre Canberra. The day brought together federal, state and local government agencies and statutory bodies to discuss the critical challenges of achieving a more innovative, transformative and sustainable public sector in Australia.

    Led by over 30 guest speakers we explored four key themes including the transformation of government service delivery for the better through improving the management of people, enhancing processes, and employing new innovative tools and technologies.

    The inaugural Agrifutures’ evokeAG event took place from 19-20 February in Melbourne and brought together players from across the agrifood technology and related research ecosystem.

    Close to 1,200 delegates from 20 different countries attended this first of its kind event which showcased new technologies and innovation ideas to increase farm gate profitability.

    The event provided a common platform for leaders, farmers, innovators and investors from Australia and overseas to exchange information. Presentations explored challenges ahead for the industry as well as generating conversations around technology adoption and the enormous transformation underway in the agricultural sector.     Workshop in discussion comp blur

    In February the Biosecurity Innovation team facilitated a departmental workshop on sensors and bionic technologies. The aim of the workshop was to identify biosecurity challenges and how sensors and bionic technologies may assist. From the group discussion several problem statements will be collated to progress.   • Challenge-based Innovation Forum 2019

    Last week we attended the Challenge-based Innovation Forum 2019 run by the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science (DIIS).

    The forum was a great success, bringing together representatives from USA, UK, Canada, Federal and State government agencies as well as industry innovation leaders.

    Presentations were given about existing innovation programs like DIIS’s Business Research and Innovation Initiative, which pitches government challenges to small to medium sized enterprises for solutions.

    The forum was a great platform for us to network with other innovators and learn from the success and improvements their programs are implementing.

    Last week the Biosecurity Innovation team attended the Innovation Playground, run by Canberra Innovation Network. The event was set up to exhibit the advancements in agri-technology, and showcase a few of the innovative start-ups that are currently working in the Canberra area. The event was a great opportunity for the team to network and see current work that is being done by innovators such as the Centre for Entrepreneurial Agri-Technology, FluroSat and Wildlife Drones.

    Last week we attended the Department of Human Services Design Hub to discuss ‘Ideas Challenges’. The event was facilitated by the Public Sector Innovation Network and brought together Australia Public Service employees to discuss the good, the bad and the ugly of ideas challenges.
