Dear Minister, on the last day the submission for the above closed, I sent an online submission.
May I respectfully ask that you please pass on my submission to the group working on the review, my submission is below.
"Animal welfare laws need to be updated to explicitly recognise animals as sentient beings, not just property. This is an important step to ensuring their humane treatment. All mandated codes of practices must include all animals as sentient beings. Work with industries that use animals, such as farming, research & entertainment to implement guidelines that recognise and respect animal sentience. Support certification programs that ensure high welfare standards and recognise animal sentience. Remove animal welfare from the portfolio of Department of Agriculture with the formation of an independant Office of Animal Welfare staffed by animal ethicists specialising in animal welfare. By incorporating these strategies we can create a society that acknowledges animal sentience and works actively to enhance the welfare of all animals.”
