We asked for your feedback on how we can modernise the legislation around agricultural levies. A number of levies legislative instruments are due to sunset in 2023.

Our survey sought feedback on the 2 options proposed in the early assessment Regulation Impact Statement.

  • Option 1 – remaking the sunsetting legislative instruments in their current form
  • Option 2 – transforming levies legislation into a more streamlined and modernised structure.

The survey was open from 24 October 2019 to 31 May 2020.

How you had your say

We asked you to:

We received 66 submissions through the survey. We heard from:

  • levy payers
  • industry representative bodies
  • collection agents for commodities.

What you said

A large number of respondents preferred option 2 (streamlining and modernising the legislation).

You also generally support:

  • using the Commonwealth’s regulatory powers framework in the design of new legislation
  • amending the methodology for calculating the 3-year rolling average gross value of production (GVP) cap to include the previous 3 years
  • removing the total levies cap on matching funding.

You use many sources for finding information about your levy obligations and responsibilities.

What happens next

We will use your survey feedback to develop:

  • a final regulation impact statement
  • draft legislation.

You will have the opportunity to have your say on the draft legislation.
